Chambers gets remediation reprieve

Frustrations overflowed as city council argued with Harbourview Apartments owner Martin Chambers about the continued state of the 3rd Avenue property.

The city had posted a 30-day remedial work order a month ago, and Chambers came before council asking for an extension.

He said people who don’t even live there are responsible for the damage and he plans to install cameras throughout the building.

Mayor Sharie Minions says city council is tired of his excuses.

“We have seen this building being an issue for many years; this is not something that has snuck up in the 30 days, so the excuses that we hear get a little tiring,” she said. “I’m optimistic that we will see some progress but we will see what happens. I think it’s important the building owner knows that council is prepared to engage in next steps.”

Chambers said he will be installing cameras throughout the Harbourview Apartments and hiring a full-time live-in manager to stop people from coming in illegally and destroying the property.

Minions said the 30 day extension was the final straw, and said the city will begin looking at other options unless significant progress is made.

Chambers will now have until mid-November to bring the building back to code or the city could do it for him and send him the bill.
