Port Alberni Mayor Sharie Minions says it’s up to the building inspector and fire department to post ‘Do Not Occupy’ orders on dangerous buildings.
The issue came up after city council voted unanimously to issue a remediation order to the owners of the Harbourview Apartments and Port Pub building.
She said council members were shocked to see pictures of apartments filled with garbage and waste, and reports of steel emergency exit doors welded shut.
“We want to see these buildings brought up significantly in standards and frankly this type of living and this type of housing isjust not acceptable in our community,” she said.
The orders were sent to owners in Victoria and Richmond, and they have 30-days to meet the city’s demands before the city does it for them at their expense.
