Island anglers are schooling in the Alberni Inlet this weekend for the Ultimate Fishing Derby.
Organized by local business people after the Port Alberni Salmon Festival was cancelled because of COVID restrictions, Ryan Henry from Gone Fishin says it will take a big fish to win top prize.
“We’re due for a good fish, so I’m hoping for a fish at least in the 40’s,” he said.
Henry says there’s a concentration of chinook in the harbour, and bait along with red and pink hootchies are working well.
He said they sold out their initial 1500 entry tickets and printed another 260, so organizers are expecting a busy weekend on the water.
