A request for a $200,000 big screen at the multiplex was quickly unplugged by city council yesterday.
Parks and Recreation Manager Willa Thorpe said the much needed feature would eventually pay for itself, and funding would come from reserve funds and not affect tax rates.
Mayor Sharie Minions said reserve funds are still monies from taxpayers.
“In these times I don’t think that’s a priority,” she said. “It’s nice when things come out of reserve but we still have to think of it as taxpayer dollars that will impact our budget in some way down the road.”
Minions said the issue should have been brought to council during budget discussions, and not midway through the year.
She suggested the issue return to council if a new corporate sponsor offers to take over the naming rights of the Weyerhauser Arena.
