Seafood Hub attracts smokery

Port Alberni’s seafood hub secured an anchor tenant this month, attracting Flurer Smokery to move here from Campbell River.

The seafood processing company will be hiring 10 people and bringing a couple of employees with them to the new location at the former Port Fish building.

Company co-owner Kelly Flurer says the seafood hub is perfectly situated to allow them to process west coast seafood for export as well as local retail sales.

“One of the biggest challenges in the seafood industry on the coast here, especially if you’re a federally registered plant, is the actual facility itself,” she said. “I think the food hub gives Port Alberni a great opportunity to get some of the greatest fresh products that the BC coast has to offer right in their own town. Grocery stores are great but it’s not the same.”

Along with the Flurer Smokery, the seafood hub will also be the processing point for Barkley Sound oyster farms and seaweed growers.

Flurer hopes to begin operations by July 1st.
