City eliminates penalties for 2020

City Council is searching for ways to help struggling businesses and homeowners through eliminating penalty fees.
The city was to raise sewer rates by 5% but have now deferred that until September.
Mayor Sharie Minions said there is a reserve fund the city can draw from if required.
“We’ve done a really great job over the last few years of building up our reserves in sewer and water to make sure we have a long-term, sustainable infrastructure system,” she said. “So we’re in a good position to be able to put a pause on those increases this year and then continue on the path hopefully again next year.”
Harbour Quay business owners had asked the city to forgive their rents for a few months, but Minions said the city can’t favour one business over another, but they eliminated late fees and interest charges for this year, so those businesses can choose to defer payments and not be penalized.
