Cannabis production next to treatment centre approved

The Agricultural Land Commission has given the green light to a cannabis production facility in Beaver Creek, across the road from a drug and alcohol treatment center.

The cement-based building will be constructed on ALR lands, and conform to laws and regulations for growing cannabis.

Beaver Creek area director John McNabb says he’s hopeful the facility will not produce any odors, and will comply with neighbourhood concerns.

“As compared to the designated grow operations that exist in a great deal of neighbourhoods within the Alberni Valley, this is a much more regulated and engineered facility,” he said. “My hopes are that there will be a very minimal neighbourhood impact.”

McNabb said since the cannabis economy hasn’t been nearly as strong as early commercial growers had hoped, and he’s unsure when the proponent will apply to begin construction.
