City Council was asked for $50,000 to study the possibility of moving the public works yard to an area near the Fall Fair grounds.
Wilf Taakema, the Director of Engineering and Public Works said the recent Coastal Response exercize highlighted the poor location of the city works yard in the case of a tsunami.
Taakema said the yard on 6th Avenue near Roger Street is within the Tsunami Innundation Zone, but admitted the area was not affected by the tsunami of 1964.
Mayor Sharie Minions said all those factors will be taken into consideration.
“We will certainly be looking at how big a tsunami would be needed in order to impact that, because if we were to move Public Works it would be a very large expense, and we want to make sure it makes sense,” she said.
Minions said the $50,000 study will be included in the city works 2020 budget request, and will be debated over the coming months.
