The Industrial Heritage Society is committed to restoring steam train service to the waterfront this summer, if only for a shortened run.
Spokesman Ken Rutherford told city council last night, that the boiler tubes are about to be installed in the 90-year old Baldwin steam engine, and 100 rail ties will soon be replaced between the train station and Stamp Avenue.
They hope to offer tourists short trips on the train for $10 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through the summer.
They asked the city for $150,000 saying they’re being forced to hire a part time administrator and mechanic by regulators.
The city is in discussion with Island Corridor Foundation to restore the rail line to Mclean Mill, and ICF hopes to restore the full train run to the mill next year.
