Officers risked lives to save distraught man

The Independent Investigations Office says it has found no evidence that police were responsible for the death of a man who drowned in Roger Creek last week.

The police watchdog says officers responding to reports of a naked man in a public place, found the man but he fled on foot and went into the frigid water.

It says two officers jumped in as they tried to save the man but he ignored them and moved further out from shore.

Port Alberni RCMP Inspector Brian Hunter said he’s very proud of the officers for going above and beyond in trying to save the young man’s life, and offered the department’s condolences to the family.
