Smudging case goes to court

A controversial case against School District 70 begins in Nanaimo today.

The Calgary-based Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms is representing Candice Servatius, a parent who objected to her children participating in an Indigenous smudging ceremony at John Howitt elementary.

The organization claims the children were “forced into supernatural rituals” contrary to their own religious beliefs.

Representatives from School District 70 and the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council will be testifying in court arguing the smudging was a cultural display and not religious.

The case is scheduled to last all this week in Supreme Court.
