Carved pole will stay in Port Alberni

The Language Revitalization Pole being carved near the waterfront will be staying in Alberni after completion next month.
The pole was originally going to be raised in front of the Indigenous Languages building at UVIC, but public pressure will keep the pole in Port Alberni.
First Nations Education Foundation Executive Director Scott Jeary says there are a few ideas of where it could be raised.
“There’s lots of possible locations. A really good site might be where you enter Port Alberni at the Chamber of Commerce, there’s a lot of space there. Somewhere in the harbour could be interesting. It’s all just speculation, we’re really not there yet,” he said.
Jeary says organizers have raised $200,000 for the project and need another $219,000 in cash and in-kind contributions, and a fundraising dinner is being held on November 22nd.
Led by master-carver Tim Paul, the pole is almost complete, and could be raised in the Spring.
