Ammonia leak closes Multiplex

The multiplex is closed after a low-level ammonia leak was discovered in the ice plant refrigeration system.

All programs and services at the Multiplex have been cancelled and City CAO Tim Pley says the facility could remain closed for at least a week.

“Ideally, we would get all the work done today, and if the ice remains salvageable, we could be back in the ice business by the end of the day,” he said. “If not, and this is more likely, then we’ll lose the current ice, and it will take about a week to take out the old ice and install new ice.”

Technical Safety BC has ordered the ice plant be deactivated, and specialized workers located a weeping leak in a weld in the newly installed chiller system, which is being repaired under warranty.

The shutdown could affect a pair of Bulldogs games and a midget hockey tournament this weekend.

In October 2017, three people died following an ammonia leak at a hockey arena in Fernie.
