Voters from Courtenay – Alberni have voted to send NDP MP Gord Johns back to Ottawa
The 49-year old Port Alberni resident told supporters in Parksville last night that he will continue fighting for west coast values, and will continue working on the issues of importance to coastal peoples.
The NDP was able to break through the tweed curtain, winning a record number of polls in Parksville and Qualicum.
Preliminary numbers suggest voter turnout was up slightly from 2015, and the NDP, Conservatives and Green Party gained votes at the Liberals expense.
Johns took 41.3% of the vote to Byron Horner’s 38%, beating the Conservative 29,000 to 26,000 votes. The Greens were third with 9500 and Liberals garnered 8500 votes.
Horner congratulated Johns on a hard fought victory last night.
Johns said he’ll take a few days to spend time with his family and catch up on laundry before getting back to work.
