Jagmeet Singh speaks in Port Alberni

Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh was in Port Alberni Friday morning, answering questions and posing for thousands of selfie photos.

Singh said it’s important for the NDP that voters re-elect Gord Johns.

“It’s awesome, it’s a great showing of love, lots of people here, it’s always fun to spend time with Gord and what I see when I meet with people is that the folks in Port Alberni know that Gord is someone who will fight for them,” he said.

Singh was welcomed to Port Alberni by a large crowd and Nuu-chah-nulth drummers, and he said treaty negotiations and protecting indigenous rights are important to him.

“For me and for New Democrats, reconciliation can’t just be a word, it has to be concrete action, and that means making sure we do the hard work negotiating treaties, making sure we work with First Nations and Indigenous peoples as equal partners, and we can do it, we just have to make it a priority,” he said.

Singh held a press conference with national media inside Johns’ campaign office before interacting with hundreds of people who had come to meet him and hear him speak.

The election is Monday.
