City flags are at half-staff this week, recognizing the passing of former Port Alberni Mayor and MLA Gillian Trumper.
The local leader and philanthopist died Friday at Ty Watson House from kidney failure at the age of 83.
Trumper was the city’s longest serving mayor, holding the job for 18 years before being elected to the provincial legislature in 2001.
She was the first woman to be given the freedom of the city, was the local coroner for many years, and most recently served on the Port Authority board
Sharie Minions said Trumper was the first to sign her nomination papers when she decided to run for mayor, and was a role model for women in politics.
A memorial will be held Friday November 8th at the Italian Hall at 2 pm.
