Cannabis producers caught between governments

Port Alberni Mayor Sharie Minions said the city and regional district should be working together to determine where cannabis production facilities should go.

She said while the city has been engaged in a public input process since the summer, the ACRD has been taking a more cautious approach

“This is a learning experience; the ACRD and City should have worked together on this going forward, before we went through a public input process,” she said. “We’re going to try to have a conversation about how we can move forward with more consistent regulations, but I think that at the end of the day everybody needs to get an understanding of the cannabis cultivation industry.”

Regional District Directors are currently mired in a debate over where to locate a pair of cannabis production facilities as potential neighbours try to push the projects away from their areas.

Minions said political leaders need to tour existing facilities, and speak with experts about cannabis production.

She said the city’s report from the public input process will be presented to council next month.
