Premier meets local leaders about Bamfield Road

BC Premier John Horgan met with a delegation with serious concerns about the Bamfield Road yesterday, which they believe were factors in a tragic bus crash on the 13th.

The Huu-ay-aht First Nation has been complaining for years about the treacherous logging road, which is the only vehicle path connecting Port Alberni and Indigenous communities near Bamfield.

Chief Councillor Robert Dennis says Horgan told him that the government is working on an engineering report about the road and will share its findings in October.

He says the First Nation is disappointed the province didn’t agree to take immediate action to improve the road.

Port Alberni Mayor Sharie Minions was also part of that meeting, and shares Huu-ay-aht’s concerns.

“I think we all left feeling a bit dissappointed that we didn’t have a very clear picture of what was going to be done, but overall optimistic that we do believe strongly that improvements are going to be made,” she said. “There was talks about adding signing, adding lighting, and adding barriers as minimum safety improvements.”

Minions said the Premier did commit to seeing the road for himself in November.
