ACRD delays cannabis production project

Alberni – Clayoquot Regional District Directors continue to wrestle with commercial cannabis production projects, and how they fit into rural communities.
After Sproat Lake residents protested against a large scale growing facility proposed for their area, ACRD directors introduced a zoning amendment to prevent construction of new cement-based buildings for cannabis production.
Angie Fernandez from Wild Coast Canna said the regional district is mistakenly trying to prevent a clean, legitimate business from providing hundreds of jobs and injecting millions of dollars into the local economy.
Fernandez said community concerns are being addressed, and there would be no odour emitted from the 377,000 square foot cannabis campus, and studies around water use and waste water are underway.
The ACRD will invite industry experts to offer their opinions before hosting a public meeting on the issue in November, and returning to the bylaw vote before the end of the year.
