A commercial fisherman died in the Alberni Harbour last night after falling off his boat into a gillnet and drowning.
The unidentified fisherman was part of the ‘Area D’ gillnet fleet fishing for chinook salmon during a 10-hour opening from 8pm last night until 6 this morning.
Port Alberni Fire Department Captain Ed Francoeur said they were called at 1 this morning to assist, and administered CPR to the man on Centennial Pier, but to no avail.
Police, WorkSafeBC, and the coroner are investigating.
