e.coli found from PaperMill Dam to China Creek

Campers at China Creek are being told to boil their water if they’re drawing it from the campground’s deep-well system.

Recent tests submitted to Island Health revealed e-coli, and Port Authority Marina Manager Cecelia Addy says it happens each summer when there’s a rain after a prolonged dry spell.

Addy says they have a well-established procedure for chlorinating their systems and will continue testing until the issue is cleared up.

The Tseshaht First Nation is working with Island Health and the First Nations Health Authority after high levels of e-coli were found at the popular Paper Mill Dam.

A swimming ban was put in place on Wednesday, and further water samples taken yesterday will be fast tracked through the lab in hopes of getting the waters re-opened for the weekend.

According to Tseshaht communications manager Melissa Bigmore, a food, social, and ceremonial chinook fishery is scheduled for Sunday at the Paper Mill Dam and community members are concerned about the effects of e-coli on the fish, and the fishers.

This follows similar closures at Canal Waterfront Park, Polly’s Point and Victoria Quay, which have since been lifted.
