Crime increases in Port Alberni

Most people don’t need a police report to realize crime is on the increase in Port Alberni.

The effects of the fentanyl crisis has led to an obvious increase in thefts and violence throughout the city.

On Monday, Port Alberni RCMP Inspector Brian Hunter will present the latest statistics to city council, showing a huge increase in property crime and violent crime.

Assaults rose by 75% from 33 in the second quarter of 2018, to 58 in the last three months of this year.

Calls for service also rose significantly between April 1st and June 30th, from 2500 to more than 3000.

While the number of criminal offenses are up by 24% in Port Alberni, Hunter says they are up by more than 47% across Vancouver Island.
