Barges to be built in Alberni

Shipbuilding is returning to the Port Alberni waterfront.

Canadian Maritime Engineering has been contracted to build four steel barges for the Royal Canadian Navy.

The barges will be 12 to 15 metres in length, and have to be built by the end of next year.

The $2-million contract will help sustain nine employees and create four new jobs for CME.

The steel barges will be used at CFB Esquimalt to support various types of maintenance on ships and will replace their six existing wooden barges.
