Alberni graduation rate improves

School District 70 graduation rates continue to improve.

School District superintendent Greg Smyth says while the overall grad rate improved again this year, the Aboriginal grad rate is especially encouraging.

The overall grad rate is 83% this year, which is in line with provincial averages, while the Aboriginal grad rate has gone from 20% in 2008 to 67% this year.

Since the opening of the new high school, the elimination of middle school transitions, and introduction of various supportive programs, School District 70 graduation rates have caught up with provincial averages.

Smyth says the “We are all Armada” campaign at ADSS has been successful at bringing all students together and creating a strong sense of community and belonging at the high school.

Smyth says while the improved grad rate is good news, teachers and administrators are not about to rest on their laurels as there is still morre work to be done.
