Unionized employees of the Alberni – Clayoquot Regional District are on strike.
CUPE local 118 president Stacy Watton says the ACRD should have a system where casual and temporary employees can earn senority, so they can apply for full-time positions when they’re first posted internally.
“It’s a pattern that we’ve been seeing for quite a while, where they’re hiring externally and then expecting the casuals that are already trained and who have worked there for many years to train the new people, but are being passed over for those full-time positions,” she said.
Watton said the 26 members will begin an overtime ban this morning, and could begin study sessions and strike training in a couple of weeks if no progress is made at the bargaining table.
