It’s Tsunami Preparedness Week, and that has the Public Safety Ministry reminding residents of coastal B-C to be ready for that risk.
The annual week in April is meant to prepare people living in earthquake- and tsunami-prone areas to plan ahead for a possible disaster.
Parliamentary secretary for emergency preparedness Jennifer Rice says it’s well known that B-C is a seismically active zone so residents should have emergency plans and earthquake kits at the ready.
District Protective Services Manager Kelly Gilday says they learned a lot from the tsunami warning last January, and the importance of evacuation plans
He says people need to know whether they’re in the inundation zone or not, and react appropriately.
Gilday says they’re also working on a phone and text-based emergency notification system they hope to roll-out in September.
