The newly-formed Alberni Valley Airport Advisory Committee voted against their manager in restoring drag racing at the airport.
In their inaugural meeting, the 9-member committee voted in favour of allowing the annual Thunder in the Valley event to return to the airport for this year, while recommending they begin looking at future options.
Alberni Valley Drag Race Association spokesman Dave Willis said they’re happy with the decision.
“That’s really what we asked for; one year,” said Willis. “I think if we can show that we can do everything up to their standards then we can stay out there. The ultimate aim is to get out there with a separate strip, but that’s down the road,” he said.
Willis said they originally had a 10-year agreement to use the airport, but it was broken by the need to do the airport expansion, with the assumption racers would return after the project was complete.
He said they will make sure the runway is cleared of rubber after the event and all facility concerns are addressed.
