The former Glenwood School will be reverting back to city ownership, after successive youth groups could not keep up with maintenance demands.
The city first signed the school over to the Navy League Cadets in 1998, who then turned responsibility to the Port Alberni Youth Centre Society in 2013.
Fire inspectors highlighted a litany of problems with the Cedarwood Street structure, and the Society lacked the resources to bring the building back to code.
The city will now be responsible for securing the building, and discussing its future use.
