Police pepper-sprayed at accident scene



Police officers were attacked again yesterday after responding to an MVI on the Redford extension.

A westbound black Chevrolet S10 pickup truck had been heading into town when the driver lost control and drove into the ditch on the right side of the highway causing a traffic hazard. The two occupants, a man and woman, appeared uninjured as they had exited the vehicle.

As officers were speaking with the occupants of the truck when they learned that the truck was stolen, and moved in to arrest the man, who reached inside his jacket an released a torrent of bear spray.

The pair ran off with the man trying to steal a vehicle from Steede Ave and Parkinson Pl, but was scared off by the vehicle’s alarm.

Two police dogs from Nanaimo Detachment were called in to search for the suspects however were unsuccessful in their search.

The man, who is known to police, and the woman remain at large and the investigation is ongoing.

Both members received decontamination treatment and were able to return to work later in the shift.

Two local officers were assaulted in a pair of incidents earlier this month, with one suffering serious injuries.
