Cherry Creek & Beaufort election ruled invalid

Cherry Creek and Beaufort voters will be heading back to the ballot box, after the court ruled the October 20th results invalid.

Supreme Court Justice Madam Matthews said there was no evidence of misconduct on the part of election officials, but she was puzzled how one of the candidates and a nominator were among the 13 people who filled out ballots for Cherry Creek instead of Beaufort.

Cherry Creek candidate Darren Deluca who lost by 7 votes testified his campaign was the target of voter intimidation, but the Judge said there was no evidence it was connected to the wrong ballots being handed out.

Cherry Creek director Diane Bodnar and Beaufort director Tanya Shannon were advised of the ruling moments before yesterdays board meeting, and were asked to leave to prevent any decisions from being challenged later.

Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District electoral officer Wendy Thompson says the process towards another election in those areas starts today.

Thompson says the election, which will be held within a couple of months, will cost the regional district upwards of $7000.
