Couple charged for beating cop



A Port Alberni police officer was badly beaten on Saturday, as he tried to arrest a man for threatening a cab driver.
The officer tried to arrest the highly intoxicated man at his home on Withers Road shortly after 8 pm, and the man flew into a rage.
He overpowered the officer and beat him mercilessly, and a woman in the home is also alleged to have taken part in the attack.
The officer was able to call for help on his radio and 38-year old Thomas Martin of Nanaimo and 25-year old Natasha Unseld-Sandulak were soon arrested, and charged with of Assault Causing Bodily Harm, Resisting Arrest, and Uttering Threats towards the member.
The pair appeared in court by video yesterday, and will appear again this morning requesting bail.
The officer was taken to hospital with serious injuries but was later released. A second officer was also injured in the incident.
