Representatives from the City and Port Authority traveled to Seattle last week to meet with cruise ship giants Holland America.
David McCormick from the Port Alberni Port Authority said cruise lines are looking at attracting a younger demographic through adventure tourism, which is a perfect fit for the Alberni Valley
City Economic Development Manager Pat Deakin said cruise companies are currently building 30 smaller ships to fit the emerging cruise market of adventure tourism, which makes the Alberni Valley a natural destination.
McCormick and Deakin were joined by Paula Plecas, whose company Trax Outdoor Adventures is a long-time excursion provider for the Holland America Group.
Holland America ships will be returning to Port Alberni this year after a 6-year hiatus.
They will be including Port Alberni on one of their Alaskan runs this summer, with a ship stopping here in May, June, and July.
