Fire bug in Dry Creek Park

Fire crews were at Dry Creek Park twice this morning, extinguishing abandoned campfires.

Park neighbours tried to extinguish the fires but didn’t have enough water, so they called the fire department.

Fire captain Randy Thoen says someone is lighting small fires on the trails, which is becoming increasingly dangerous as the forests are quickly drying out.

The information on the suspicious fires has been handed over to police, who are now investigating.

There are three forest fires currently burning on Vancouver Island – the Tugwell Creek fire near Sooke is listed at 100 hectares, the Rush Creek fire near Nanaimo Lakes is 14 hectares in size, and a new fire was recently discovered at the east end of Upper Quinsam Lake.
