Mid-Island Pacific-Rim MLA and Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Scott Fraser, says this week’s report from the BC Treaty Commission is justifiably hopeful.
He says negotiations with the Ditidaht First Nation are going very well, and could reach the AIP stage next year, given the support from Nitinat Lake area stakeholders, including regional governments and local forest companies, who have been supportive of a Ditidaht treaty
Meanwhile the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council table remains stalled, and hasn’t met for more than a decade since 5 Nations broke away to negotiate the Maa-Nulth Treaty.
Although Fraser said at a recent Chiefs meeting in Vancouver, Nuu-chah-nulth showed interest and optimism in restarting treaty negotiations.
