Alberni District Secondary School Wrestlers Deliver Strong Performances Across Multiple Divisions
Alberni District Secondary School (ADSS) athletes showcased exceptional determination and competitive skill at the Island Novice Tournament held at Royal Bay Secondary School, earning numerous top placements across both female and male divisions. This event marked the first competition of the season for ADSS, and with the tournament designated for wrestlers in their first one or two years of competition, the results were especially encouraging.

ADSS athletes demonstrated impressive talent across the female categories. Grade 8 wrestler Samantha Chandler led the team by capturing gold in the Female 52kgs category in a close match against her teammate Emma Anker, who finished with a strong 2nd place performance. Lily Anker also claimed 2nd place in the Female 46–49 division. In the Female 53–55 category, Olivia Olsen secured a 3rd-place finish, while the Female 56–57 division featured two more ADSS placements: Maddy Dumais in 3rd and Alivia Forrester in 4th.

“The girls division was senior and junior combined, so for our team to tie Vanier for second place behind the home school with only six junior females—five of them in Grade 8 and all of them competing in their first high school tournament—was pretty incredible,” noted coach Maureen Miller. “We are really excited for what’s to come with this incredibly talented group of athletes.”
ADSS junior male competitors also delivered strong results. In the Jr Male 43–47 division, Finley White earned 2nd place, followed by teammate Max Scholey in 4th. Makani Bourgain delivered a solid 2nd-place performance in the Jr Male 51–58 division. Logan Doerksen added another 2nd-place result for ADSS in the Jr Male 68–73 category, and in the Jr Male 87–91 division, Logan Albert secured 2nd place, further boosting the team’s podium total.

“It is encouraging to see that our Junior Club program is giving our athletes a lot of knowledge and skills that they are bringing to the high school wrestling room,” stated ADSS Coach Travis Cross.
ADSS senior athletes also delivered notable achievements, including a division championship. Theris Ward became the Sr Male 71–73 Division Champion, earning 1st place in a strong field of competitors. In the Sr Male 52–57 category, Jacob Crossley finished 5th, while Ethan Dageforde secured 4th place in the Sr Male 59–64 division. Riley Wood placed 5th in the Sr Male 65–68 category. The Sr Male 83–90 division saw two ADSS athletes place: Logan Albert in 4th and Dayson Larson in 5th.

With consistent performances across nearly every division entered, ADSS athletes demonstrated depth, talent, and competitive spirit. Their collective achievements reflect the dedication of both the students and coaching staff, and the school congratulates all athletes for their hard work and success.

ADSS wrestlers will be back in action next week at the season opener, the QMS Christmas Classic in Cowichan.
