Teenager drowns in Sproat Lake

Port Alberni RCMP say they have recovered the body of a drowning victim in Sproat Lake.

The update comes two days after R-C-M-P were called to the lake for reports of a missing 17-year-old after a canoe he and two others were in capsized and sank.

Two of the boat’s occupants both 16 years old were forced to tread water for an hour before being rescued by local boaters.

The trio had launched from the Sproat Lake boat launch on Saturday, and police were told at 1:30 in the afternoon that one boy was missing.

An extensive search for the teenager was conducted by marine and land-based Search and Rescue Units, RCMP Air Services, RCMP Underwater Recovery Team and community members.

Yesterday afternoon the body of the missing youth was located and recovered, submerged in approximately 120 feet of water near where the canoe had capsized.

Police say the victim has been identified by his family and no further information will be released.
