ACRD launches waste study

Alberni Valley residents produce a lot of garbage, and a study has been launched to determine ways to reduce waste.
ACRD Solid Waste Coordinator Jodie Frank says we each produce more than a third more garbage than the provincial average.
“At the moment we’re producing approximately 562 kg of waste per person, per year,” she said. “If you break that down, it’s about 1.5 kg of daily waste per person. We’d really like to see that drop down to 350 kgs per person per year, and in order to do that we need to divert more waste and look at different programs.”
Frank says the organics diversion campaign has been quite successful and has led to a 40% drop in the amount of waste going into the landfill, but there is still some compostable materials needlessly going into garbage.
The ACRD has launched a Solid Waste Survey they’re hoping everyone will participate in, which is available on their website https://www.letsconnectacrd.ca/ or hard copies of the survey are available at their office on 5th Avenue.
