Representatives from the Huu-ay-aht First Nation and the province cut a ceremonial cedar rope yesterday to officially open the refurbished Bamfield Road.
The 76 kilometre road has undergone leveling and chip sealing over the past 2 years, making safer and easier access in and out of Bamfield and Anacla.
The $40-million improvement has been discussed for decades but advanced quickly after a bus crashed in September 2019 killing two UVIC students and injuring many others heading to the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre.
The Huu-ay-aht First Nation is hopeful the road improvements will help increase tourism in the area where they own many key properties and are looking at implementing a visitor fee similar to Tofino.
