Courtenay – Alberni MP Gord Johns is asking the federal government to change Canada’s National anthem.
Johns presented a petition from constituents saying since the national anthem was amended in 2018 with gender-neutral language to ensure equity and inclusion, it should also represent indigenous people.
The petitioners want the anthem’s lyrics officially changed from “Our home and native land” to “Our home on native land”.
Canadian singer Jully Black recieved criticism and congratulations for singing the proposed amended wording at the NBA all-star game in February of this year.
Johns said the one-word change would help Canada fulfill part of its commitment to the 45th call to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
