SOGI education sparks protest

Placards, flags and slogans lined Roger Street yesterday as a Canada-wide march against sexual orientation education planned for Port Alberni was pre-empted by those in favour of the program, setting up in front of the School District office before the protesters could arrive.
One Million March for Children local organizer Charlaine opposes gender identity education.
“The children need to be children. Let the kids be kids,” she said. “Stop indoctrinating them with sexology and gender ideology. There’s no room for that in school.”
On the other side of the street, Graham Hughes saw the positives in the protest.
“I think it’s a sign of progress that in our community we’re having a conversation about tolerance and diversity, which is what SOGI is all about,” he said. “It’s to educate that people come from different backgrounds and have different lifestyles but we all become Canadian. We all have the same rights under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and education is just supporting and protecting those rights.”
While upwards of 70 people were part of the anti-SOGI march, more than 100 people came out to peacefully protest against them.
