Chinook fishing is about to hit it’s peak – just in time for the Labour Day Salmon Derby.
According to Fisheries and Oceans researchers, 20% of the entire Robertson Creek run will come through the inlet this week, conditions permitting.
Anglers have had the best success trolling from the harbour to Lone Tree Point using big bubblegum hootchies or anchovy with
newer fish being picked up in the narrows, and at Mactush and Franklin.
Some coho are coming in as well, and have been biting white hootchies and spoons.
Colby at Gone Fishin’ thinks the derby winner will be a 33 pounder caught along the outside of the sound
He says Swale Rock, Pill, Diplock, Beale, Whittlestone, and the Bamfield Wall have been producing using smaller spoons, hootchies and bait.
