Fisheries forecasts 114,000 Chinook

Fisheries forecasters are predicting a banner year for chinook salmon.

114,000 springs are expected to make their way towards the Somass River as they return to the Robertson Creek Hatchery.

Recreational anglers have already landed more than 6,000 chinook while the commercial fisheries get their first opening this weekend.

Gillnetters have a late night fishery on Sunday, and seiners will put their nets in on Wednesday.

The abundant run bodes well for the Labour Day Salmon Derby in just two weeks, with 11% of the fish expected to be larger 5-year old chinook.

Less than 20% of the run, or around 21,000 fish are required for escapement to collect 9 million eggs to continue the successful hatchery program.
