City petitions Province for emergency route

City Council will be sending a letter to the BC Government, requesting Horne Lake Road be made an emergency route around Cameron Lake.

The City is being joined by the regional district, west coast First Nations and corporate partners in the mandate letter.

Mayor Sharie Minions said west coast communities require a usable detour while Highway 4 at Cameron Bluffs is being repaired.

“We know that they’re not talking right now about about a second highway out of the community and we’re not either, although we all would like that,” she said. “What we’re talking about right now about is an emergency route out of our community and an emergency road being ready to go whenever needed and we know Horne Lake Road needs improvement in order to be designated that way.”

The 12 kilometre long Horne Lake Road is a narrow, bumpy logging road, with dozens of blind corners and is owned by MOSAIC Forestry.

Yesterday, the province announced that Highway 4 will be closed this Thursday and next Thursday from 8:30 am until 9pm to allow crews to remove approximately a dozen refrigerator-sized boulders as part of the rock-scaling work being done at Angel Rock.
