Public Input debated by Council

Port Alberni City Council continues to face opposition for a proposed change to public input opportunities at council meetings.

The current proposal would move Public Input from regular council meetings to Committee of the Whole meetings, and move Public Question Period from the beginning of council meetings to the end, after decisions have already been made.

Councillor Todd Patola said the city needs to have a better plan in place before changing procedures.

“There’s a plan that perhaps public input will be increased through a new structure,” he said. “In the interim, without that new structure, I’m not sure that we’ve actually achieved anything other than reducing the amount of public input.”

Patola and Cindy Solda voted against the procedures amendment, which passed despite their opposition.
