Highway 4 closed “indefinitely”

Highway 4 remains closed indefinitely with no chance of reopening until the fire is out and upslope stability can be secured.
Large rolling rocks and sliding trees have been landing on the highway, with flames reportedly coming close to the road near the Beaufort Picnic Area.
Coastal Fire Centre’s Kimberly Kelly says slope stability experts are monitoring the situation.
“The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has been monitoring it closely and has brought slope stability experts to assess and make decisions regarding highway safety,” she said.
Kelly says 26 firefighters, 5 helicopters and airtankers are attacking the 140 hectare blaze.
The Ministry of Transportation has established a detour route via Lake Cowichan, but warns there is no cell service, gas stations and the route has challenging terrain.
