Brush fires increase

Fire crews were called out last night to a brush fire in the Scott Kenny trail area of Roger Creek.
Deputy Chief Wes Patterson said the fire started small but had a much larger potential.
“The fire was about 50’x70′ and started down close to the trail and was moving rapidly up the bank towards the horse barn area near the end of 10th,” he said. “We had two crews working on it until about 11 o’clock last night.”
Patterson says crews were called out to 4 other brush fires over the past few days.
He said the forest floor and bark mulch gardens are extremely dry right now, and vulnerable to discarded smoking materials or oversized campfires.
The Coastal Fire Centre recently had crews battling a small blaze west of Sproat Lake and another near Parksville.
With continued lack of precipitation in the forecast, a campfire ban could be forthcoming.
