PASS continues to help

The Port Alberni Shelter Society remains busy, despite losing one of their most visible facilities.
Executive Director Wes Hewitt says they still operate the old shelter on 8th Avenue, despite losing the contract to operate the new, larger shelter facility across the street.
He says the society remains committed to helping people with issues and addictions at their 10 other sites.
“We’ve tried to work to develop a continuum so that the individuals and clients that we work with, the ones who want to make change have an opportunity, and an opportinity to work back through partnerships that we have with places like North Island College and other organizations that give them education to being back in the community in a productive way,” he said.
Hewitt says they still offer transitional and family housing, along with the Overdose Prevention Site and sobering sites.
He says BC Housing still hasn’t told them why they were unceremoniously dumped from the shelter facility they had built on 8th Avenue, and requests to meet with the BC Housing CEO and Minister have been ignored.
