Local governments receive grants

The City has received a million dollars from the provincial government to remediate a contaminated area of the Somass Mill lands.

According to the city’s grant application, the clean-up of a small but highly contaminated area will allow the City to begin an application process, that once completed, will permit redevelopment of the entire 43-acre property either in whole or in parcels.

The clean-up will involve North Island College trades students, who will demolish two buildings under the supervision of the project contractor.

Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program funds also went to the Hupačasath First Nation who received $800,000 to develop a salmon processing facility, the Tseshaht First Nation was given more than $150,000 to begin design of a Business Park, and the Uchucklesaht Tribe Government will get $920,000 to expand the production capacity of their award-winning Thunderbird Spirit Water.
