Mayor Sharie Minions wants to make sure city residents get first chance at parks and recreation programs, and rural residents get put on waiting lists.
It’s the latest in a series of discussions about how to get more regional district funding for city services that people outside municipal boundaries access.
“We hope that we will move forward with recreation being, as it is in most communities and most regional districts, a regional initiative rather than just a city initiative,” she said. “We want to make sure that it is equitable and that it represents the needs of all in our Alberni Valley, but we also want to make sure from the city’s perspective it’s our responsibility to ensure that the City gets the best value for the services that they pay for.”
Many years ago the city instituted resident cards for accessing recreational programs and services at the multiplex and echo pool.
Minions said a similar program could be instituted, but it’s just a discussion at this stage.
