Road Repair Budget leaves surplus

If you think not enough attention was being paid to road repairs last year, you’re right.

At the recent meeting of the audit committee, questions were asked why public works spent only a third of their roadway surfaces maintainence budget last year.

Rob Dickenson, the Director of Engineering and Public Works said crews were busy on other major projects.

“Last year we were focussing on completing legacy capital projects such as 6th Avenue that had some outstanding projects that had been around for 4 or 5 years,” he said. “With our limited resources we can either do one or the other so we did the legacy projects then late fall and into spring we tried to get as much road repair work as we could, but obviously we didn’t get nearly enough done considering how much budget we had left over.”

With a budget of $782,000, they spent $284,000, leaving almost $500,000 to be absorbed back into general revenues as surplus.

Rob Dickenson, the Director of Engineering and Public Works said that won’t be happening again this year.
